The
market town of Holywell not only serves the shopping needs of
the people of the town itself, but also those of the surrounding
villages within the town's natural catchment area.
The
villages within the Holywell catchment area include: Bagillt,
Brynford, Carmel, Gorsedd, Halkyn, Lixwm, Lloc, Mostyn,
Pantasaph, Pentre Halkyn, Rhes-y-Cae, Rhosesmor, Trelawnyd,
Whitford, Ysceifiog and the town of Caerwys.
In addition there are other smaller scattered communities within
this area. All of these are within a six mile radius of Holywell.
These villages are all connected to Holywell by a frequent bus
service.
Although
the population of Holywell according to the last census in 1991
was 8,758, when the population of the above villages and the surrounding
countryside, which according to the same census totals 14,775
is added, it will be seen that Holywell serves or has the capacity
to serve a total population of more than 23,000 people.

are nearly 140 businesses in Holywell town centre of which about
50% are retail outlets with the remainder being commercial/service
businesses. Collectively, these businesses employ in the region
of 800 full and part-time staff. Most are small independent family-owned
businesses plus a small number of regional chainstore outlets
and national companies such as Woolworths, Peacocks, Iceland,
Somerfield,
Kwik Save, HSBC Bank, Barclays Bank, National Westminster Bank
and Abbey National.
There are a range of other businesses outside the town centre
but within the town boundary. Additionally there are some 30 large
and medium size commercial and industrial businesses based at
the Greenfield Business Park and a further 50 or so smaller businesses
based at the nearby Greenfield Business Centre where there is
also a training facility for new and fledgling businesses provided
by the operators, Flintshire Enterprise Ltd.
